Ridge tiles bedded and pointed along a roof ridge

Roofing service

Ridge tiles and repointing on exposed Marsh roofs

Ridge and hip tiles replaced and mechanically fixed, plus repointing.

Wind pulls upwards on a roof rather than pressing down, and the suction is fiercest at the ridge, the verges and the eaves. That is why storm damage almost never starts in the middle of a slope.

BS 5534 was revised in 2014 so that ridge and hip tiles must be mechanically fixed rather than held on with mortar alone. Plenty of roofs around here still rely on bedding mortar that was never designed for the exposure it now sits in, which is why we replace more ridge tiles than almost anything else.

What the job involves

  • Ridge and hip tiles lifted, cleaned and refixed or replaced
  • Dry ridge and dry verge systems, mechanically fixed
  • Repointing where mortar has cracked or washed out
  • Verges made good so wind cannot get under the edge
  • Bedding checked along the whole run rather than only where it shows

Included in this service

  • Ridge tile replacement
  • Repointing

Two roofs, half an hour apart, two specifications

Sheltered, inland Ashford
Galvanised fixings
Perfectly sound here, and cheaper. Spending more would be spending for the sake of it.
Exposed, Lydd and Dymchurch
Stainless fixings
Quoted as standard rather than as an upgrade, because the cheaper option does not survive out here.

Salt off the Channel corrodes ferrous metal far faster than ordinary damp air. We have taken tiles off roofs on the coast after nothing more than a breezy week, purely because the nails holding them had rusted through. That is a specification failure, not a tile failure.

If a roofer quotes the same specification for a Lydd bungalow as for a sheltered terrace in town, they either do not know the difference or have not priced for it.

How we specify for each area

Ken and Charlie re roofed our maisonette after having a bad leak and arranged for other work to be done for us which they also were involved. Everything that was done was to a high standard. He kept us informed regularly, was tidy and very reliable. I personally would highly recommend this man.

Had these guys come to do a moss removal job. Fantastic work, cleared all the moss using the safer method of doing it by hand rather than pressure washer. Cleared up after themselves and roof now looks much better. Highly recommended and we're going to use them again to bring the fascias and soffits up to scratch and do a couple of minor roof repairs next.
