A chimney is the most exposed masonry on any roof. It stands proud on all four sides, it is warmed from the inside while everything around it stays cold, and on the coast it takes salt as well as rain.
That combination is why chimney work makes up a steady share of what we do, and why stacks are usually the first part of a coastal roof to need attention rather than the last.

Salt off the Channel corrodes ferrous metal far faster than ordinary damp air. We have taken tiles off roofs on the coast after nothing more than a breezy week, purely because the nails holding them had rusted through. That is a specification failure, not a tile failure.
If a roofer quotes the same specification for a Lydd bungalow as for a sheltered terrace in town, they either do not know the difference or have not priced for it.
