Stripping back to the rafters and rebuilding with new membrane and treated battens.
Under the tiles sit the two layers that actually keep a roof working. The membrane sheds anything that gets past the covering, and the battens hold every tile on the roof.
When either has gone, retiling over the top only hides it. Stripping back and refelting is more work up front and it is the difference between a roof that lasts and one that comes back.

Salt off the Channel corrodes ferrous metal far faster than ordinary damp air. We have taken tiles off roofs on the coast after nothing more than a breezy week, purely because the nails holding them had rusted through. That is a specification failure, not a tile failure.
If a roofer quotes the same specification for a Lydd bungalow as for a sheltered terrace in town, they either do not know the difference or have not priced for it.
